What you absolutely mustn’t miss in Vienna’s 16th district
What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? It is the second-largest market in Vienna after the Naschmarkt and, with around 170 stalls and a length of 948 metres, it is the longest permanent street market in Europe.

Our tour of the Ottakring district therefore begins right there — and takes us from the market, past the Heurigen, all the way up the hill.
The Brunnenmarkt
Start from Thaliastraße and head down Brunnengasse, where you can enjoy the colourful, multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offerings — haggling is very much encouraged here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you’ll reach the Yppenmarkt, which carries on the market tradition on a former parade ground. So: switch to a relaxed, leisurely stroll.

Once we arrived at the Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of Vienna’s coolest rooftop terraces for you: from the roof of ‘WIRR am Brunnenmarkt’, you have a magnificent view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Highly recommended, whether for a coffee, a spritzer or a meal — as soon as spring returns and we can hopefully all enjoy these wonderful moments with friends again. Vienna’s oldest wine tavern
And whilst we’re on the subject of dining out in Ottakring, we simply must tell you about the 10er Marie. Vienna’s oldest Heuriger, opposite the Alt-Ottakring parish church, is a real institution and remains a meeting place for prominent artists and politicians to this day. Incidentally, the name ‘10er Marie’ derives partly from the address — Alt-Ottakring No. 10 — and partly from the daughter of the original wine tavern landlord. And even though the 10er Marie is tucked away from the usual tourist crowds, it’s actually always packed here in summer!
A pus-filled one and a 16-gauge sheet
Who amongst you has ever heard someone order “a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech” at a Würstelstand? In the loveliest Viennese dialect, this of course refers to a Käsekrainer and an Ottakringer beer in a can. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces – now award-winning! – beers, but is also available as an event venue. A guided tour of the brewery or a visit to one of the numerous events is highly recommended, not least because of the unique combination of historic architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: deliveries from the “16th Beer District” can currently also be ordered online!
Up to Wilhelminenberg
If you’re feeling a bit cooped up during these weeks of lockdown, with all the working from home and curfews, we recommend a walk up to the Wilhelminenberg. From the U3’s terminus, the walk takes just over half an hour, taking you past the beautiful Ottakringer Cemetery: The climb is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Viennese vineyards — and a workout for your calves. If that’s still too much exercise for you, the 46A bus will also take you up to Wilhelminenberg.
Living in Ottakring
In recent years, Ottakring has evolved from a working-class district into one of Vienna’s liveliest residential areas — with refurbished Gründerzeit buildings around the Brunnenmarkt, peaceful locations at the foot of the Wilhelminenberg, and prices that haven’t yet reached those of the inner districts.
